JOLLY PHONICS

JOLLY PHONICS IS A THOROUGH FOUNDATION FOR READING AND WRITING. IT USES THE SYNTHETIC PHONICS METHOD OF TEACHING THE LETTER SOUNDS IN A WAY THAT IS FUN AND MULTI-SENSORY. CHILDREN LEARN HOW TO USE THE LETTER SOUNDS TO READ AND WRITE WORDS.

IT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY SUE LLOYD AND SARA WERNHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN THE UK.  IN 1977 THEY DEVELOPED THE SYSTEM OF JOLLY PHONICS AND WITHIN ONE YEAR THEY NOTICED THAT BY THE END OF THE FIRST YEAR THE CHILDREN WERE ON AVERAGE, A YEAR AHEAD OF WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN, IF THEY HAD NOT CHANGED FROM THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF LOOK, COVER AND SAY.

THE FIVE BASIC SKILLS FOR READING AND WRITING ARE:

1.  LEARNING THE LETTER SOUNDS

2. LEARNING LETTER FORMATION

3. BLENDING

4. IDENTIFYING SOUNDS IN WORDS

5. SPELLING THE TRICKY WORDS.

SETAREGAN AND JOLLY PHONICS

THIS SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED TO SETAREGAN IN 1998  AND FOUND SUCCESSFUL IN TEACHING  CHILDREN WHO WERE LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. WITHIN ONE YEAR THE CHILDREN HAD LEARNT ALL OF THE 42 JOLLY PHONIC SOUNDS AND BEGAN READING THE LADYBIRD READING SCHEME, WHICH WAS INTRODUCED AT THE SAME TIME TO WORK IN CONJUCTION WITH JOLLY PHONICS.

OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE ADAPTED THE SYSTEM TO MEET THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS WHO ARE LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE AND INTRODUCE IT AS A SLOWER PACE THAN IF THEY WERE LEARNING IT AS A FIRST LANGUAGE.

HOW JOLLY PHONICS IS INTRODUCED IN SETAREGAN

1. FIRSTLY AT THE AGE 0F 3 AND A HALF, THE CHILDREN ARE INTRODUCED TO THE FIRST 25 SOUNDS – ONE SOUND PER WEEK, THIS IS DONE THROUGH THE USE OF THE JOLLY PHONIC SONGS, WORKBOOK, FINGER BOOK AND DVD.  AT THIS AGE EVERYTHING IS LEARNT MULTI-SENSORY WITH FUN.

2. AT THE AGE OF 4 TO 5 THE CHILDREN ARE INTRODUCED TO THE FIRST 25 SINGLE SOUNDS AGAIN BUT IN MORE DEPTH, THROUGH ACTIONS, SONGS, and WORKBOOKS SHOWING CORRECT LETTER FORMATION, STORY BOOKS, DVD AND THE PHONIC BINGO GAMES.

ONCE THESE SOUNDS HAVE BEEN LEARNT THE CHILDREN  MOVE ONTO BLENDING; THE PUTTING OF SOUNDS /LETTERS TOGETHER TO FORM SIMPLE ONE SYLLABLE WORDS , SUCH AS BAT- CAT –RAN- FAN AND INTRODUCED TO EASY READER BOOKS.

3.IN PRE-SCHOOL THEY LEARN THE REMAINNG 17 SOUNDS, KNOWN AS DIGRAPHS, TO READ MORE COMPLEX WORDS, THESE REMAINING SOUNDS ARE INTRODUCED OVER THREE MONTHS.  TRICKY WORDS WHICH ARE NON-PHONETIC ARE ALSO TAUGHT AT THIS POINT THROUGH THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF LOOK, COVER AND SAY.

ONCE AGAIN THESE SOUNDS AND WORDS ARE RE-INFORCED DAILY BY INTRODUCING THE LADYBIRD READING SCHEME; EACH CHILD HAS THEIR OWN BOOK TO PRACTICE AT KINDERGARTEN AND AT HOME WITH THEIR PARENTS. THERE ARE 16 BOOKS IN THIS READING SCHEME.

JOLLY PHONIC BINGO IS ALSO INTRODUCED 3 TIMES PER WEEK TO REVISE ALL OF THE 42 SOUNDS, THIS GAME IS EXCELLENT TO HELP ANY CHILD WHO MAY HAVE BEEN ABSENT AND MISSED SOME IMPORTANT DIGRAPH CLASSES.

ONCE ALL OF THE 42 SOUNDS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED AND LEARNT THE CHILDREN MOVE ONTO SPELLINGS, DICTATION AND INDEPENDENT WRITING.

WE MAKE A GUARANTEE TO ALL PARENTS THAT ANY CHILD WHO ENTERS SETAREGAN AT THE AGE OF 3 AND LEAVES AT THE END OF PRE-SCHOOL WILL BE INDEPENDENT IN READING AND WRITING.

THE CHILDREN WHO HAVE LEARNT TO READ AND WRITE WITH THE JOLLY PHONICS SYSTEM HAVE ON AVERAGE A READING AGE OF AROUND 12 MONTHS AHEAD OF THEIR ACTUAL AGE. THEIR SPELLING AGE IS ALSO FURTHER AHEAD.

MANY OF SETAREGAN STUDENTS HAVE GONE ONTO COMPLETE
